Safer Stations Initiative

The Council led Safer Stations Initiative began in 1992 bringing together all the agencies and businesses who could contribute towards reducing crime and disorder at and around the London Underground and mainline transport networks within and adjacent to the London Borough of Wandsworth.

The Safer Stations Partnership Agreement was officially launched in March 1999 and set out the broad principles for the future of the Safer Stations Initiative, a pledge to co-operate in achieving these principles and an action plan for the key measures proposed in the first year of the partnership.

As an integral part of the monitoring and evaluation of the work of each partner within the Safer Stations Initiative, an annual inspection of stations is undertaken. The findings of the Council's Crime Prevention Officer identify the progress achieved by the initiative and outline proposed actions for the coming year.

Notable achievements by the initiative include extensive works on the approaches to Wandsworth Town, Wandsworth Common and East Putney stations as well as the provision of secure cycle parking facilities at many stations and the installation of CCTV coverage inside and on the approaches to stations. A number of stations in the Borough have now received Secure Station accreditation from British Transport Police.

All of the organisations within the Safer Stations Initiative have committed to work in partnership to improve the safety, accessibility and the environmental quality of rail stations in the Borough and to promote the use of public transport as the favoured transport option.

With the government drive towards sustainable futures and integrated transport options, a review of the Safer Stations Partnership will seek to reaffirm the partnership agreement with train and tube operators and extend it to include bus services transport providers for the benefit of the local community.
