Our Wandsworth 2018

Ensure all children and young people achieve their full potential

Our vision

We want Wandsworth to be a place where every child and young person can achieve their full potential and enjoy a healthy, safe, stable and happy life as active and responsible citizens.

What you've said

Children and young people in Wandsworth tell us that they feel healthy, enjoy school and have opportunities to engage in sport and exercise.

Teenagers would like better youth facilities. You would like more support and advice on emotional and sexual health issues and are concerned about bullying, gang culture and safety on transport.

We need to make sure that educational achievement continues to improve in an increasingly competitive world. We also need to join-up services better for families and tackle pockets of deprivation in the borough.

What we'll do

  • Build two bigger and brighter youth centres
  • Continue major capital programmes to improve, update and extend all schools
  • Improve overall education standards and exam results
  • Extend young people's sexual health services
  • Stem the increase in childhood obesity
  • Work more effectively with our partners to help and protect children
  • Reduce child poverty
  • Work with young people at risk of offending
  • Provide more support to parents, including increasing access to childcare
  • Increase the involvement of young people in decision-making

How we're doing it

All Wandsworth's secondary mainstream and special schools will be rebuilt, remodelled or upgraded under the Building Schools for the Future scheme.

Burntwood school is one of two 'sample' schools that will be the first to benefit under the government-funded scheme. It will get new and improved classrooms, a new sixth form area, a performing arts space and improved sports facilities.

The school will also host a skills centre to support the study of business and finance, science, health and development and sport. Work is expected to start in 2010/2011, with work on remaining schools beginning in the next four years.
