Our Wandsworth 2018
Building a prosperous and vibrant community
Our vision
We want to keep Wandsworth a prosperous and vibrant community with five distinct town centres, a wide range of opportunities for new and existing businesses and a successful regeneration programme tackling areas of inequality and worklessness.
What you've said
Businesses have two key issues: parking and business rates. There have also been concerns about congestion charging.
The 2012 Olympic Games and the development of Battersea Power Station are regarded as business opportunities, but the economic downturn will create many challenges.
We must ensure our small shops are not squeezed out by big chains, and that our town centres are well-placed to survive in a difficult trading climate. We also need to tackle pockets of deprivation and equip our young people for the labour market.
What we'll do
- Offer financial assistance to eligible small independent businesses
- Create jobs and business space by working with developers to bring forward key sites such as Battersea Power Station
- Carry out environmental schemes and attract new investment to strengthen our five town centres
- Regenerate target areas in Battersea, Tooting and Roehampton
- Tackle the challenges in Tooting and attract new investment
- Protect New Covent Garden Market
- Get more people skilled-up and into work, especially under-represented groups
How we're doing it
Over the past ten years the borough's economy has been transformed, and now Wandsworth is one of the most prosperous boroughs in inner London. It is also well-placed to ride out the current economic storm, with several major developments planned for Wandsworth Town Centre and Nine Elms, a regeneration plan for Roehampton and development opportunities in Putney, Balham and Tooting. The council and its partners have
launched a programme aimed at publicising what the borough has to offer and attracting even more inward investment.
