Barn Elms Boathouse News
As the evenings begin drawing in it's a good time to reflect on the past season at the Boathouse.
The new full-time team of Jill, Steve and Mark were committed from the start to increase participation in local races and maybe even take home the odd trophy! Our first two members representing the club were Katherine Jarman and Helen Gray in the annual Scullers Head of the River Race. This is a 4 1/4 mile time trial over the same course that the Oxford and Cambridge crews use for their match race. The ladies did themselves proud on the day and were proudly flying the Barn Elms flag. Our two coaches Mark and Steve also competed at this event finishing 26th and 83rd respectivley out of 418 competitors.
Our next crew to race took to the water for the Hammersmith Womens and Juniors Head. This was a particularly great achievement for these ladies as they had only begun rowing some 3 months earlier! Although a slight technical glitch during the middle of the race cost them some time they managed to complete course and wowed the crowds with their snazzy matching kit!
The result of the season came from Katherine Jarman competing in the Novice Single at Putney Town Regatta. After some consistent training and good preparation Katherine managed to come away from the event as the Novice Champion. She will back for more racing next year and will now have to move up to the Intermediate level of racing.
Our Junior rowers also competed at Egham Regatta which was the first event all of them had been to. Although they didn't claim any wins on the day they have certainly been bitten by the racing bug and will be back for more next year.
One of the full-time coaches, Steve also managed to finish of his racing season with 3 wins at the National Championships. Competing for London Rowing Club he was able to claim victory in the coxless and coxed four as well as the eight.
More recently the Boathouse hosted a record breaking attempt by a 14yr old rower. Tim Livingstone was able to break the UK record for the furthest distance completed on a rowing machine in 4 mins for his age group. He had most recently been coached by Steve at the London Youth Games where he managed to claim the Gold Medal to add to his National Record.
As we move into the winter months we hope to see as many of our members as possible taking to the water and competing in races up and down the country.
