Bulky items and DIY waste collections

Other ways to dispose of bulky items

Doing it yourself

  • Take to your nearest Household Waste and Recycling Centre (tip/dump). See WRWA's website for information on how to do this.
  • If you will be using a car with a trailer, a van or other commercial vehicle you need advance authorisation from WRWA, which you can get from their website or phone us (020) 8871 8558.

Using somebody else

  • If you use 'a man with van' to take away your rubbish you must check that the person is a registered waste carrier. Ask for, and record, the number. If you are not sure, call the Environment Agency on 0800 807 060.
  • You can be prosecuted for using a non-registered carrier; if they fly-tip your waste you could be held responsible.
  • Some organisations can offer free collections for a limited range of bulky items e.g. large electricals.  Check our A-Z recycling list for details.
  • Some private companies offer chargeable collections of a range of items and try to recycle what they can. Visit www.anyjunk.co.uk/ or www.weclearjunk.com/.

What not to do

  • Do not pay the refuse collectors to take away extra rubbish. The collectors have no authority to take money and can be dismissed or prosecuted if they do so. You could also be liable to prosecution.

Reuse

  • To book a reuse collection online visit http://www.londonreuse.com/ or call (020) 3142 8506. Suitable furniture and appliances are collected for refurbishment and repair at the new workshop based at the Household Waste and Recycling Centre in Smugglers Way, Wandsworth.  More information on bulky item and reuse collections.
  • You can donate or sell bulky items such as furniture or electricals, for example using websites such as Ebay or Freecycle
  • View our A-Z list on the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle page for other green, low-cost options on getting rid of things you no longer want.
