Hazardous waste collections

What is it?

Hazardous waste is waste that may be harmful to health or the environment.

Collection service

  • The Corporation of London organises a household hazardous waste collection service on behalf of the council.
  • This service covers asbestos, paints, white spirits, weed killers, acids and items containing poisonous chemicals such as cyanide and mercury (e.g. a broken thermometer).  It excludes explosives such as fireworks, radioactive materials and pressurised containers such as gas canisters.
  • Wandsworth residents are entitled to a maximum of one free collection of asbestos a year and three free collections of chemicals each year.
  • For more information, visit the Corporation of London household hazardous waste collection service.
  • To arrange a collection, please contact the Corporation of London on 020 7332 3433.

Please note

Small quantities of hazardous waste from domestic sources can be disposed of with your general refuse provided that they do not pose a significant risk to collection staff.  However, most such items can be recycled or collected separately. Doing this will help to reduce the environmental impacts of your waste. For example, batteries can be recycled at local libraries and leisure centres. Small electrical items can be recycled at the Household Waste and Recycling Centres at Smugglers Way, Wandsworth and Cringle Street, Battersea.
