Connecting Clapham Junction
6. Improve the routes between the town centre and the station
The council has already invested in improved access to the Grant Road side of the station with a new landscaped route from Bramlands Close monitored by CCTV, and a new pedestrian crossing in Grant Road. However, the St. John's Hill side of the station remains hidden from the town centre behind shops and offices, and is separated from it by busy roads and cluttered footways.
The council has a £6m programme of improvements to the town centre environment based on the "putting the pedestrian first" strategy. The programme will improve conditions for pedestrians by:
-
decluttering and repaving the footways
-
reducing the amount of guardrail
-
improving the pedestrian crossings
-
improving lighting
-
re-routeing some through traffic away from the junction of St. John's Hill and St. John's Road
Work is expected to start in March 2010, and will take several years to complete.
Further work is also needed to improve the visibility of the station from the street, and to upgrade signage to the station and to the town centre.
What do you think?
We are keen that investment is targeted effectively and delivers real improvements - particularly for people living locally who use the station regularly.
