Connecting Clapham Junction
5. Provide new rail services to Heathrow and Gatwick airports
There are currently no direct rail services to Heathrow Airport from Clapham Junction and no non-stop services to Gatwick Airport.
Heathrow Airport
Through membership of the SWELTRAC (the South & West London Transport Conference) partnership, the council is part of the AirTrack Forum, which supports in principle the creation of a new direct rail link connecting Heathrow Airport to the South West Trains rail network in south-west London. This would provide a direct service from Clapham Junction to Heathrow Airport terminal 5, with a stop at Putney requested by the council.
The project represents excellent value for money, and requires only four kilometres of new track. Public consultation has been undertaken and a public inquiry is expected shortly to examine the details of the scheme. The project needs the support of the Government and the railway industry if it is to proceed.
Gatwick Airport
To reach Gatwick Airport, local people have to travel to Victoria to catch the Gatwick Express, or share other main line services from Clapham Junction with commuters. The council has asked for the Gatwick Express to call at Clapham Junction, and for more fast trains to stop. We face an uphill battle as the Department for Transport has dictated that some Gatwick Express services are combined with fast services to Brighton, and must not stop at Clapham Junction. The council is continuing to lobby for all trains to stop at Clapham Junction.
