Connecting Clapham Junction

4. Improve the station environment and facilities

Photo of Clapham Junction forecourt forecourtIn an independent report to the Government in 2009, Clapham Junction was officially labelled as the second worst interchange station in the country. The Better Rail Stations report includes a mystery shopper survey assessing the access, information, facilities and environment of the station against the proposed minimum standards for interchange stations. Clapham Junction scored only 39% compared with a recommended standard of 70%. This score clearly demonstrates the lamentable state of the station, and justifies the council's long-running campaign to secure improvements.

The Secretary of State has responded to the report by allocating £50m to improve the ten worst stations, and the council has since met with him to ensure that Clapham Junction receives a substantial part of this, as befits its role as the country's busiest station.

All aspects of the waiting environment and facilities at Clapham Junction need to be reviewed. Passenger safety and comfort is the main concern. This can be improved through:

  • higher staffing levels
  • upgraded security
  • better information for customers
  • improved weather protection
  • extended canopies
  • provision of waiting rooms on platforms
  • extra seating
  • additional toilets
  • Additional and improved refreshment facilities on platforms

Network Rail are installing lifts to all platforms which are due to be completed in June 2010. A new entrance from St. John's Hill onto the footbridge is also planned. These improvements will help passengers with mobility difficulties, parents with prams or people carrying luggage.

We are keen that investment is targeted effectively and delivers real improvements - particularly for people living locally who use the station regularly.
