Connecting Clapham Junction
2. Connect Clapham Junction to the Underground
The council hopes to connect Clapham Junction to the Underground in two ways, firstly by bringing forward the long delayed Crossrail 2 project, and secondly by connection to a possible Northern Line extension at Battersea Power Station.
Crossrail 2
Crossrail 2 (previously called the Chelsea-Hackney Line) is a safeguarded route for an underground railway running from south-west London to north-east London. However the route as currently safeguarded would not serve Clapham Junction. Wandsworth Council and neighbouring councils have identified better, alternative routes through Chelsea and Battersea that would serve Clapham Junction. These options would provide direct links to the rest of the Underground network, relieve congestion on lines into Victoria and Waterloo, and provide a direct link to the Eurostar terminus at St. Pancras.
The council now wants to see a firm timetable established for Crossrail 2. Crossrail 2 would be significantly cheaper than Crossrail 1, which will cost £16bn and will not bring any direct benefit to Clapham Junction or south London.
The current Crossrail 1 scheme, on which construction work has now started, is a new east-west railway that will run through central London from Heathrow to Stratford. Services are due to start in 2017. For up to date information on the scheme visit www.crossrail.co.uk.
Northern Line Extension
As part of the redevelopment of Battersea Power Station, the developer is proposing an extension to the Northern Line linking Kennington to the Power Station. If this is agreed, the council would like to see the Northern Line extended to Clapham Junction.
