Battersea Park event venue

Introduction

Battersea Park is found between Chelsea Bridge and Albert Bridge on the South Bank of the River Thames.

History

Battersea Park was opened by Queen Victoria in 1858. Its 200 acres was landscaped using one million cubic yards of soil, dug out during the construction of Victoria Docks.

A variety of events have been held here since the late nineteenth century, when the Royal Agricultural Show for Cattle and Working Horses took place in July 1862.

In 1951 the pleasure gardens were built as part of the festival of Britain. Billed as 'London's loveliest playground', the gardens offered eating, drinking, shopping, revelling, strolling, dancing, boating, singing and fairing.

Today

Battersea Park is a major London event venue hosting a wide range of events throughout the year, whilst leaving most of the parks 200 acres for others to enjoy at their own pace.
An up-to-the-minute programme of events is also available.

The park has undergone a £11 million restoration programme with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund. You can find out more at the Battersea Park section of this site.
