Dog Control Service
Schools work experience programme
Since 2006 we have created an excellent schools work experience programme. We look for young people who have a real keen interest in dogs. The programme is suitable for pupils in secondary school year 10 and above and also for mature students involved in animal related studies.
We encourage local schools to participate in the programme and we do get young people from outside the borough (even one from Nottingham who stayed with a relative for the duration of the programme). Dog Control have been award a Certificate of Recognition by the Bexley School's BEST Team for this programme.
During the one or two week programme, the young person spends time with one of the experienced Parks Police Dog Handlers, and visits both Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, and the Blue Cross Animal Hospital in Victoria.
They also learn how handle a stray dog; given basic guidance in respect of dangerous dogs; dealing with the public / reporting offenders; microchipping and all other aspects of Dog Control Service.
At the end of the programme the student attends a mock interview for a job selection within the team; they give evidence at a mock court having been shown how to undertake the prosecution of a byelaw offender and finally they are asked to give a short 5 - 10 minute presentation on a dog / animal subject of their choice to an invited audience.
During the programme the young person is carefully mentored at all times by one of our experienced members of staff, all of whom have been CRB checked to the highest level.
