Dog Control Service
Community programmes
We promote responsible dog ownership in a number of ways.
School visits
Once a year, by invitation we visit schools in the borough to talk about responsible dog ownership. The visits last for half a day. Our experienced staff not only talk to the children, but to parents and teachers. The talks can be incorporated into curriculum lessons and cover subjects such as looking after your dog (humanities and welfare), microchipping and stray dogs (science), dogs and the law (community involvement), the safe and sound scheme (health and safety) and responsible dog ownership (linked to National Walk to School Week).
Community Group Visits
We can either arrange a roadshow in your area or you can invite us to one of your meetings to give a talk/answer questions or you may be able to suggest a way for us to help your group or community. We are open to suggestions.
The Good Citizen Scheme
The scheme consists of a series of tests aimed at basic (bronze level), intermediate (silver) and advanced (gold) dog obedience for which the Kennel Club sets the standard.
We judge all three levels of the scheme. The bronze level can be judged at open shows and events, including the annual Parks Police Companion Dog Show. The silver and gold levels are judged at local dog training clubs.
Roadshows
We run roadshows (dates and venues for 2010 to be listed here shortly) many are supported by Parks Police, the Housing Department and Metropolitan Police Safer Neighbourhood Teams.
At roadshows we give advice and guidance on our service, responsible dog ownership and on the law and policies on dogs within Wandsworth.
