We pick up and collect stray or lost dogs we find in the borough. (A stray dog is any dog in a public place without an owner present.) If the dog has been microchipped we try to reunite the dog with its owner. Where this isn't possible we take the dog to Battersea Dogs and Cats Home where it is cared for.
We are at the forefront of a radical new council scheme to microchip all dogs on Wandsworth housing estates. Dog microchipping is now part of your tenancy agreement.
We patrol the 13 square miles of the borough. This includes all parks, gardens, commons and other open spaces, all housing estates, road carriageways and footpaths.
We enforce any laws and bye-laws that relate to dogs and where necessary will take legal action against offenders.
We work with the Metropolitan Police, RSPCA and other dog trusts to deal with dangerous dog incidents as part of the Dangerous Dogs legislation.
We investigate and try to sort out any complaints about dog nuisance, giving help and advice when needed.
We handle applications for Multiple Dog Walking Licences.
We are implementing new Dog Control Orders.
We investigate anti-social behaviour involving dog incidents/dog owners.
We promote responsible dog ownership in a number of ways, including:
talking to children in schools;
taking part in 'Walk to School' weeks (we bring our own dogs and walk with the children to school);
organising and running roadshows (with the assistance of Parks Police and the Met Police and cover other issues such as bicycle marking, crime prevention etc); and
going to meetings run by tenants' associations, housing co-operatives, residents' groups, neighbourhood watch groups and environmental concern groups.
We give advice to dog owners on all dog related matters.
