Food premises registration

About food premises registration

Summary of requirements

To store, prepare, distribute or sell food on premises in Wandsworth, you need to be registered as a food business 28 days prior to opening. This includes restaurants, cafes, hotels, shops, canteens, market stalls, mobile catering vans and food delivery vans. You need to register with the Local authority where your business is based.  For restaurants, cafes shops and other premises operating in Wandsworth this is Wandsworth Council.  If you run a mobile catering van, food delivery van or market stall you need to register in the borough where you pay your council tax and store your food overnight.

Some food manufacturers, food processers and catering butchers handling products of animal origin may need to be approved by the local authority or the Meat Hygiene Service rather than registered, and premises which need this approval must not operate before it is given. See food premises approval for more information.

If you are uncertain whether your business needs to be approved or registered, contact the Food team on 0208 871 6139.
