Election of a Borough Councillor for the Southfields Ward - Thursday 29 March 2012

Why is this election taking place?

With the resignation of Lucy Allan, a vacancy for one councillor has arisen in the Southfields Ward. The election to fill this vacancy will take place on Thursday 29 March, and a full timetable of events is shown below.

All registered electors within the Southfields Ward and who are entitled to vote in Borough Council Elections are entitled to vote in this election, including citizens of the European Union.

Royal Marines Reserve Centre, SW18 5JX is not available for this election

Please note that polling station - Royal Marines Reserve Centre, 351 Merton Road, London SW18 5JX - is not available for the Borough Council Election. All electors who normally attend that polling station should go instead to: St Barnabas Church Hall, Merton Road, London, SW18 5AE. The hall is practically opposite the Royal Marines Reserve Centre.

The Reserve Centre is being used for the 2012 Elections for the Mayor for London and the London Assembly on 3 May 2012.

The Election timetable: key dates 

  • Thursday, 9 February 2012 - The publication of the Notice of Vacancy.
  • Thursday, 23 February 2012 - The publication of the Notice of Election.
  • Friday, 24 February to Sunday 26 February 2012 - Poll Cards and Postal Poll Cards were delivered by Council staff to all eligible electors who are currently on the register of electors within the Southfields Ward and are entitled to vote in Borough Council elections, this includes citizens of the European Union. These will be yellow in order for electors to differentiate between the borough council election and the 2012 elections for the Mayor of London election and the London Assembly taking place on 3 May 2012, cards for which will be delivered between Saturday 31 March and Sunday 1 April 2012.
  • Friday, 2 March 2012 - Noon - This was the deadline to receive candidate nomination papers.
  • Tuesday, 6 March 2012 - Noon - Publication of the Statement of Persons Nominated.
  • Wednesday, 7 March 2012 - Noon - This was the deadline for the withdrawal of a candidate.
  • Wednesday, 7 March 2012 - Noon - This was the deadline for the appointment of Election Agents.
  • Wednesday, 7 March 2012 - Publication of the Notice of Election Agents
  • Wednesday, 14 March 2012 - 5pm - This was the deadline to apply to vote by post or to cancel or amend an existing postal vote. It was also the deadline for a proxy to apply to vote by post on behalf of the elector or for an elector to cancel their proxy postal facility.
  • Wednesday, 14 March 2012 -  Midnight - This was the deadline for completing and returning a registration form to be added to the register of electors. 
  • Friday, 16 March 2012 - Ballot papers for postal voters were issued on this day.
  • Wednesday, 21 March 2012 - Publication of the Notice of Poll.
  • Wednesday, 21 March 2012- 5pm - This was the deadline to apply to vote by proxy unless the elector has a medical emergency after this time, please see next timetable entry.
  • Wednesday, 21 March 2012 - from 5pm - If an elector is taken ill or has a medical emergency after 5pm on this day they can apply to vote by proxy. Their application will need to be attested by a medically qualified person. Their proxy will have to attend the elector's polling station on election day. More about voting by proxy
  • Thursday, 22 March 2012 - The publication of the Notice of Alteration took place on this day in order to take into account those electors who were added to or deleted from the register up to and including Wednesday, 14 March 2012.
  • Friday, 23 March 2012 - From this day an elector, who has been granted a postal vote facility but has not received their ballot paper or has lost or spoilt the one they have received, can apply to have a replacement ballot paper.
  • Thursday, 29 March 2012 - Polling Day and the Southfields polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm. From 5pm no more medical emergency proxy vote applications can be received and no more replacement ballot papers can be issued.  
  • Thursday, 29 March 2012 - The verification and counting of ballot papers for the election will commence from 10pm and the results will be posted on the website immediately they are known.
