Flytipping

Fly-tipping is when rubbish is dumped illegally.

It is unsightly, can be unsafe, and it might attract pests such as rats and flies. Help keep our streets clean by:

  • reporting fly-tips for clearance
  • managing your rubbish correctly
  • contacting us if you can provide a witness statement that would help us prosecute a fly-tipper.

Report on-street fly-tips for clearance

You can report on-street flytips for clearance online (select the "Street cleansing" option and add a space when entering your postcode).

However, to report fly-tips on roads running through Council managed housing estates, see below.

Clearing fly-tips

Small on-street fly-tips (less than 2 cubic metres) are usually cleared automatically as part of the scheduled street cleaning services or by the end of the day after it was reported to us.

Larger fly-tips are usually cleared within two working days (Monday to Friday) of being reported. However, there may be a delay if enforcement officers need to investigate first.

Fly-tips which are considered a hazard will be cleared sooner by the rapid response service. This includes the removal of debris from road traffic accidents, dead animals, oil spillages and broken glass.

Fly-tipping and the law

We will fine or prosecute people who dump rubbish in the street and our enforcement officers now have the power to issue £400 fixed penalty notices on-the-spot for fly-tipping.

The maximum penalty for fly-tipping is £50,000 fine and/or 12 months in prison.

Vehicles used for fly-tipping can be seized and destroyed, and convicted offenders may be required to do community service.

Fly-tips on private land

The responsibility for clearing fly-tips on private land lies with the private land owner. Private land owners seeking a fly-tip clearance service should contact a privately operating licensed waste carrier or contact us for a quote.
