Order a copy birth certificate

We are in the process of digitalising our paper indexes. These will be off-site until June 2017. During this period we will be unable to produce certain certificates or perform extensive searches. 

For births before 1965 certificate applications should be made to the General Register Office: 

The General Register Office offer a priority service.

For births after 1965 certificate applications should be made to Wandsworth Register Office.

If you would like to order a birth certificate you need to provide the following information about the entry:

  • Child's full name
  • Date of birth
  • Place of birth
  • Mother's full name
  • Mother's maiden name
  • Father's full name

There are two types of birth certificates available:

  • The full birth certificate includes the child and the parent's information and is used for passport applications, school admissions.
  • The short certificate only included the child’s information.

Order online

You can order a certificate online and pay by debit or credit card. You may collect your certificate 3 working days after ordering it or we can post it to you.

  • £10 (collect after 3 working days)
  • £11 (sent by first class post)
  • £17 (sent special delivery, including overseas)

Order in person

You can order a certificate in person at the Register Office. You may order a copy certificate at the following times: 9am to 4pm, Monday to Friday.

  • £30 - Express service (within 1 hour)
  • £20 - Next day service (collect at the same time the next day)
  • £10 – Standard service (collect after 3 working days)

We do not offer the express service for pre-1900 birth, death or marriage certificates.

Order by post

Send an application form or a letter and a self-addressed, stamped envelope to:

Cheques or postal orders payable to 'Wandsworth Council'.   

  • £11 (sent by first class post)
  • £17 (sent special delivery, including overseas)

Your letter should include:

  • full name at time of birth
  • date of birth
  • place of birth
  • both parents' full names
  • number of certificates required
  • a contact telephone number and email address so that we can contact you directly.

Delivery outside the UK

If you do not live in the UK, you can still order a certificate if the birth took place in Wandsworth.

Births outside of Wandsworth

If a birth occurred outside the London Borough of Wandsworth you can order the birth certificate directly from the register office where the birth entry is held.

Births outside of the UK

We only hold records of births registered in Wandsworth. If you were born overseas but registered with the British Consulate you will need to apply to the General Register Office for a copy certificate.

If you're missing some details

All records of births which took place in England and Wales will be held at the General Register Office (GRO). The GRO is able to carry out a much wider search in cases where details are not known. You can order a certificate online or at 0300 123 1837.
