Governor training and support

Types of training

The central programme

All course details are now held on Wandsworth TPD online on the Schools and Governors portal. Please visit the site and go to the Search Event tab to search the current programme.

Attending the central programme, which mostly takes place at the Wandsworth Professional Development Centre on the Burntwood School site, has the following advantages:

  • The opportunity to learn from experts
  • The opportunity to meet other governors, share practice and gain new ideas and insights
  • It is cost effective - information can be cascaded to fellow governors
  • Topics can be relevant to governors with specific areas of interest/responsibility.

Schools can purchase a range of traded services packages which include free attendance at governor training and development sessions.

e-learning

e-learning can be an effective, flexible way of learning. Wandsworth has negotiated a special subscription rate for Wandsworth schools to Modern Governor. To find out more visit the Modern Governor website.

If you would like your governing body to have access to Modern Governor, ask your school to subscribe to the e-learning package via the Wandsworth Online Traded Services for Schools website. The cost is £130 per school per year.

School-based training

We can also offer a wide range of training opportunities, tailor made to meet the requirements of an individual governing body and at times and venues of your choice. School-based training has the following advantages:

  • It helps the governing body to develop as a team
  • All members of the governing body receive the same training
  • It enables governors to discuss information which is relevant to their school
  • It enables governors to reach an understanding on matters of common interest
  • It provides an opportunity for governors to invite school staff or other governing bodies to work with them on a particular issue.

If you feel your school would benefit from such a session, speak to your chair of governors who can help you arrange it by contacting Alison Thomas by emailing athomas@wandsworth.gov.uk in the first instance.

SWLSEP

Governor Services in Wandsworth has well established links with services in other local boroughs through the South West London School Effectiveness Partnership (SWLSEP).

The South West London School Effectiveness Partnership (SWLSEP) Governance is a consortium of six Local Authorities - Croydon, Kingston, Merton, Richmond, Sutton and Wandsworth - with established advice, training and support services for school governors and clerks.

The partnership is committed to identifying and developing innovative solutions to national and local governance agendas. SWLSEP Governance holds a National College for Teaching and Leadership  licence to deliver the Chair of Governors' Leadership Development programme and Clerks Development Programme.

Supporting chairs of governors

We know that a confident, well-supported chair is an essential part of an effective governing body and have introduced a package to support them. This includes:

  • Termly meetings for chairs and vice chairs
  • The opportunity to participate in the National College for Teaching and Leadership Governors' Leadership Development programme.
  • Opportunities to be involved in a mentoring scheme for new chairs.

Working in partnership with the head

We recognise the high expectations placed on governing bodies and the need to ensure they understand their roles and operate as effectively as possible to help secure school improvement.

With this is in mind we offer the opportunity to participate in the Achieving Outstanding Governance Programme which is led by Michele Robbins, an experienced trainer and consultant.
