What sort of accommodation is available?
We let modern flats for either one or two people usually in a scheme setting.
They are designed specifically for older people's needs, for example, plug points are higher, doors are wider and some flats have been specially adapted for wheelchair access or people with mobility problems.
They have the added security of an alarm service and a sheltered housing officer for help and support. Most are set in attractive gardens close to shops and local amenities.
Why move into sheltered housing?
There are a number of reasons, for example you may:
- wan to move to a smaller property that is easier to maintain
- feel safer in a community scheme setting
- want to make new friends
- want that bit of extra support
Sheltered housing offers you the chance to live in a community environment with facilities that suit your needs, but still keep your own front door and privacy.
Sheltered housing officers
Each scheme has an experienced sheltered housing officer from Monday to Friday. Generally, officers are responsible for the management and security of the building, as well as the safety and welfare of the residents.
Can I get support?
Sheltered housing officers offer support and assistance. They help you settle in and are your first point on contact for housing matters. If you need extra support, like care services, these can be arranged through social services.
Facilities in schemes
These have been installed for the comfort and convenience of residents:
- a sheltered housing officer for advice and support
- 24-hour alarm service for greater security
- social activities
- central heating and hot water
- residents' communal lounge
- communal garden
- guest rooms (for your visitors)
- free laundry facilities
- visiting library
- ramps, wider doorways and lifts (where feasible)
- door-entry system
- smoke alarm system (where appropriate)
- security cameras (cctv)
- concessionary TV licence (where agreed by TV licensing)
Each property has an alarm system in case of emergencies, like a fall or sudden ill health. We provide a 24-hour a day, 365 days a year service.
In an emergency our emergeency wardens will respond rapidly. They are trained to give first aid and will contact your relatives, doctors or other professional help if necessary.
Can I keep a pet?
Yes, we encourage responsible pet ownership. We will also discuss alternative care arrangements for your pet should the need arise in the future.
All schemes meet the strict requirements of the fire brigade, like fire retardant doors and smoke alarms. Where appropriate, there is a fire alarm system and equipment provided for emergency fire fighting.
The council's safety officer regularly inspects all schemes to ensure that there are no safety hazards and that fire safety equipment and alarms are working properly.
