New Biz on the Block: Well Kneaded Pizzeria
In addition to selling delicious sourdough pizza from a van and trailer in Wandsworth and beyond, Well Kneaded provides employment opportunities to young people from South West London’s marginalised communities.
Hailed as one of London's 'Top 7 Pizzas' by Time Out and twice runners-up in the Observer Food Monthly awards, last December the team launched their first pizzeria shop based in Earlsfield. Co-founder Bridget tells Open4Business about it.
Why did you decide to replace the pizza van with a shop?
The van and trailer were amazing, but we wanted more scope for youth employment, and to have a home where people could come and eat our award-winning pizza six days a week! However, we still use the van to cater for weddings and private events around London.
Tell us a bit about the social element of the business
We employ young people who struggle to find work from marginalised communities in South West London, and that is still why we operate.
What has been one of the most challenging aspects of setting up the shop?
Timelines on the building works being finished has been extremely challenging indeed!
How many covers does the new restaurant have?
27, but with more outside seating to come.
How many different pizzas are on the menu?
Eight or nine including specials, we are always changing them up.
If you had the chance to do it again, what would you do differently?
Impossible to say at this stage, I don’t think anything...yet!
What three tips would you offer to an entrepreneur thinking of opening a restaurant?
- Budget well
- Get as many recommendations as possible for the builders you use
- Take time to build your team - we have an amazing team and they are key to our success
