News and press releases
What you've said
You believe clean streets and high quality parks and open spaces are two of the top factors in making Wandsworth a good place to live.
Traffic congestion and speed, pollution and issues such as litter are the main environmental concerns. Carbon emissions and household waste levels are still too high, although you say you are willing to take positive action to be greener. There is concern that new and existing developments may damage the environment, and climate change and population growth are major and ongoing challenges.
The expansion of Heathrow is also a major issue.
What we'll do
- Increase levels of household recycling and composting
- Reduce energy use in council premises
- Pilot new ways of generating and recycling energy
- Continue to challenge Heathrow's expansion
- Protect important wildlife habitats and help develop the
- Wandle Valley Regional Park
- Provide a network of electric vehicle re-charging points
- Improve air quality and cut carbon emissions
- Ensure new buildings and spaces are sustainable and provide maximum benefit to the borough
How we're doing it
A new recycling scheme has been launched in Battersea Park to make it easier for visitors to recycle on the go. Twenty-five new recycling bins have been placed in 'hot-spots' where people are likely to be picnicking or playing sport. Just like the council's orange sack scheme, the bins will take a mixture of recyclable items including glass, paper, card, plastic bottles, cartons and cans.
Wandsworth residents are now recycling 26,480 tonnes of rubbish a year - or almost a quarter of the total waste collected.
