Consultation on Admission Arrangements of Community Primary and Secondary Schools for 2013/14
The Council is consulting on the following changes to school admission arrangements for 2013/14. Comments are invited and should be sent by email to: admissions@wandsworth.gov.uk no later than 3 February 2012. Please include 'Admission Consultation' in the email subject heading.
All Community Primary Schools
It is proposed that the distance from home to school is measured in a straight line. Currently distance is measured using the shortest walking route with street lighting.
Straight line measurements are widely used to provide an objective means of prioritising applications for school places. They are simple to operate and make it easier for parents to assess the likelihood of being offered a place. Such measurements do not rely on accurate mapping of every street-lit route and are therefore less open to dispute.
As part of this consultation, the Council is requesting that the Governing Bodies of Foundation, Voluntary Aided schools and Academies in the borough, for which measurements are provided by the Council, agree to adopt a straight line measurement in the school's oversubscription criteria for 2013/14.
- Proposed oversubscription criteria for community primary schools without priority areas
- Proposed oversubscription criteria for Furzedown, Franciscan, Penwortham and Sellincourt schools (with a priority area)
- Proposed oversubscription criteria for Beatrix Potter school (with priority areas)
Shaftesbury Park Primary School
It is proposed that a bilingual (English/French) stream will be introduced at Shaftesbury Park Primary School from September 2013.
Ernest Bevin College (Secondary)
Following a revision to the School Admissions Code and consultation with all maintained secondary schools and academies in the borough, it is proposed that priority will be given to siblings of all children on the college roll. This change will extend priority to siblings of children in Years 11 and 13 and children on roll who were formerly admitted to a category 1 (selective) place.
It is also proposed that distance from home to the college be measured in a straight line for the reasons set out above.
Footnote: Priority for Children Looked After
The Revised School Admissions Code requires that priority to Children Looked After be extended to include those who ceased to be Children Looked After because they were adopted or became the subject to a residence order or special guardianship order.
This change has been made in the oversubscription criteria, but is not the subject of consultation.
