Tooting Together
Tooting Forward
The second phase of the Tooting Together campaign is now underway. We call this Tooting Forward. A big part of this work focuses upon making the town centre more appealing for shoppers.
These efforts acknowledge the results of a significant piece of research commissioned by the Council and carried out by specialist retail consultants Experian in late 2009, which identified the gap between existing stores and the shops Tooting's consumers most want to see.
The main objectives of the retail strategy are to:
- Attract more multiple Stores, particularly those identified in the Experian Gap Analysis study
- Seek more synergies between potential investors and commercial property owners
- Develop the potential of retail/mixed use sites
- Encourage existing traders to improve the range and quality of goods on offer further upgrade the existing offer; and
- Improve parking.
A shortlist of key retailers has been drawn up and the council will work to attract these to the town.
Other initiatives during 2010 have included:
- A new town centre map
- A publication aimed at potential investors
- Two promotional films about Tooting
- A range of student projects in partnership with St George's University of London
- Events for traders to inspire and motivate

The town centre manager is working closely with the new owners of Tooting Market - the intention is to focus on a more creative offer and rent-free periods of up to three months are being offered for suitable tenants.

She is also working closely with the manager of Morleys (formerly known as Smith Bros) - the Morley Group own this store and have recently significantly upgraded the store and its offer.
