Tooting Together

An Action Plan for Tooting

The Tooting Together action plan is a way for the council to make sure that, working together with our partners, we deliver improvements in Tooting.

Tooting Together has been running a year now, and the results are clear to see. You can download a presentation in the related downloads area.

A video project run jointly with students from South Thames College gave Tooting people a chance to have their say about the town. See it here

Improvements that have already happened include

  • A series of litter blitzes have been held and penalty notices issued
  • Litter bins with integral ashtrays have been installed
  • CCTV is being used to monitor fly-tipping hot-spots
  • Unlicensed street-traders are being more heavily enforced
  • Alleyways have been cleaned-up, gated and lit and an Alley Watch scheme will help stop problems happening in the future
  • The Samaj Hall alley (next to Nat West bank) has been lit and will be resurfaced
  • Street clutter has been reduced and traders who have ignored warnings not to obstruct pavements have been issued with fixed penalty notices
  • Unnecessary guardrail and superfluous bollards and signs have been removed
  • Street furniture, such as railings, has been painted along Mitcham Road .
  • Time-banding for commercial waste collection has been introduced
  • A dedicated town centre police Safer Neighbourhood Team has put more officers on the beat.
  • An alert box system has been launched to enable small traders to communicate with each other in emergencies.
  • The good neighbour scheme has been launched.
  • A free Saturday car park has opened at the Franciscan Road Professional Centre.

A retail strategy has also been launched to see how the town centre can be made better for shoppers. The aim is to

1. Attract more multiple Stores

2. Promote existing stores more effectively

3. Improve the range of goods on offer

4. Make it easier to park.

A shortlist of key retailers has been drawn up and the council will work to attract these to the town. Other plans include an online resource for potential investors and continued discussions with existing property owners and store managers.
