The 2M Group: against Heathrow expansion
The previous government's expansion plans
The previous government announced in January 2009 that it would be giving BAA the go ahead for a third runway at Heathrow. It said it wanted the runway to open by 2015 - five years ahead of the original date.
The Transport Secretary at the time also announced that he was abandoning plans to end runway alternation. This had been a major focus of the 2M campaign.
The Government had said that extra capacity on the third runway would be subject to meeting air and noise pollution standards.
