Connecting Clapham Junction
7. Improve interchange between rail, buses, taxis and cycling
At present, interchange between rail, buses, taxis and cycling at Clapham Junction is hampered by an overcrowded subway and platforms at the station, steep stairs, congestion on the roads and pavements and shortage of space for taxis and cycles. Bus stops are also congested and scattered over several streets because of the complexity of the bus network.
Interchange between the different modes of transport needs to be improved.
Improved waiting facilities are needed at bus stops, with better timetable information for customers. Ideally bus routes need to be rationalised further to reduce congestion in parts of the town centre.
Improved facilities should be provided for buses in Grant Road to reduce congestion and allow more bus routes to serve Grant Road. This would require a redesign of the bus stand. The council is pressing Network Rail as the landowner to co-operate in this.
The new entrance to Clapham Junction station via Brighton Yard (Point 3), and new lifts and stairways currently under construction will substantially improve interchange for many travellers, particularly those with mobility difficulties. The new entrance will also reduce congestion in the subway, making it easier to interchange between platforms. The new taxi rank and cycle parking in the forecourt will help interchange between trains and these modes.

We are keen that investment is targeted effectively and delivers real improvements - particularly for people living locally who use the station regularly.
