The council and the 2M Group ran a successful campaign to retain runway alternation. Although the consultation document had forecast an extra 60,000 movements a year from increased usage of the existing runways, 2M had calculated a much higher figure of 170,000. This was based on Gatwick's single runway which accommodates around 50 landings and take-offs an hour for much of the day.

The impact for many people in west London would have been all-day flights and all-day noise.

The maps below show the likely effects on different communities of a change which, for the moment, has been deferred.

Hoping for a quiet half day?

This is dependent on the current practice of runway alternation where planes use different runways for landings and take-offs. Find out the weekly schedules for Heathrow arrivals  in 2008.

Remember: the current relief provided at around 3pm when aircraft switch runways will be lost if the Government goes ahead with its expansion plans.
