Repairs to Putney Bridge
Bridge closure consultation
The council has secured significant funding to carry out essential repairs to Putney Bridge over the River Thames. The road surface and the bridge’s underlying waterproofing need to be replaced. An improved drainage system is also required while other elements of the bridge need to be refurbished.
The council would like to know your views on the options to close the bridge during repair, which is scheduled for summer 2014.Please email us on firstname.lastname@example.org or call 020 8871 8201 by Friday, 31 January 2014.
- Option 1: Fully close the bridge to vehicles for an estimated 6 months
- Option 2: Partially close the bridge to one traffic lane for an estimated 11 months
Under both options, at least one footway would remain open at all times for pedestrians. Therefore, cyclists would be able to dismount and use the footway to cross the bridge.
It is accepted that the repairs will disrupt traffic in the area for local people and commuters. The proposal to close the bridge to all vehicles for six months means that the works will be completed in a much shorter period and cause less overall disruption.
Traffic modelling has shown that the level of traffic disruption will be equal under both options.
