Applying for housing and transfers

Housing

This section gives information about applying for social housing (a council or housing association property) and transfers.

How to qualify

You can apply directly to any housing authority in the country although the Localism Act 2012 gives local authorities the power to specify particular classes of person who do and do not qualify for housing in their area and, if you don't meet the qualification criteria, your application won't be registered.

Your chances of being offered social housing (a council or housing association property) in Wandsworth or elsewhere will depend on the supply of, and demand for, homes in the area, whether you meet the qualification criteria set by the local authority and the priority awarded to your application.

In general London is a popular place to live and Wandsworth is no exception to this so it is sometimes easier or more convenient to find somewhere to live in other parts of the country. Therefore, this section also contains information about a number of schemes through which we and / or other councils may be able to help you move to other areas.

Equal opportunities

We are committed to the promotion of equal opportunities and aim to ensure that homes are let fairly to all sections of the community and in accordance with the Housing Allocation Scheme (request a copy online) or contact the housing department on 020 8871 6800).
