Extended schools

Schools are working together with a range of partners and providers to extend the services on offer to pupils, parents and the wider community. By September 2010 the Government expects all schools to have access to extended services.

An extended school must provide the core offer, either within the school itself or more usually by signposting to other schools and local providers. You can find out more at www.teachernet.gov.uk/extendedschools

The core offer:

  • A varied programme of activities
  • Childcare, including holiday provision (primary schools only)
  • Swift and easy access to specialist targeted services
  • Parenting support
  • Community access

In Wandsworth 96 percent of schools are offering the full core offer. Extending services will help to support learning and build community cohesion.

Benefits of extended schools

Research by OFSTED shows that extended schools produce a number of benefits.

For pupils, there was evidence that activities could have a positive impact on attainment, behaviour and attendance.

For families, there was evidence that activities could have a positive impact on involvement in children's learning and that adult education was helping parents to act as role models for their children.

For communities, there was evidence that activities could have an impact on community pride and community.

Projects and improvements so far include ICT suites for school and community use, improved playgrounds that are open during the school holidays, equipment for breakfast and after school clubs, a community gym and other improved sports facilities

Services are delivered via six clusters of schools within the borough.
