Changing schools

Admission of children already of school age

Children without a school place

If you have moved into the borough of Wandsworth and require a school place for a child you will need to complete the Council's application form for in-year admission.

Parents and carers should contact the Pupil Services section to find out the availability of places in the schools in Wandsworth, and to obtain an application form. If your child was born between 1 September 2000 and 31 August 2007 you will need to request a Primary School application form and if your child was born between 1 September 1995 and 31 August 2000 you will need to request a Secondary School application form.

Children who already have a school place

If your child already has a school place in the area, but you want them to transfer to a different school, you should discuss this with the Headteacher of their current school before making an application. Problems at school can often be sorted out without the need to change schools.

If a change of school is necessary, you will need to find out if there are places available at other local schools. You will then need to request a transfer form. The move should take place at the beginning of a term or half term, wherever possible. Parents and carers may not legally withdraw their child from school unless they have arranged a place in another school or made alternative arrangements for their child to receive full-time education.

Older children

If your child was born before September 1995, they are over compulsory school age and you will need to apply direct to a school or college for a place on a course of study.

Younger children

If your child was born after August 2007 and you are seeking a nursery place you will need to make applications direct to nurseries. Please contact the Family Information Service for further information on 020 8871 7899.

Fair Access Protocol

The Council is required to have a Fair Access Protocol which seeks to ensure that the Secondary schools in its area admit an even share of children with a history of poor behaviour or attendance, or who have been out of school for some time.
Council staff work with schools and parents to decide which school these children should attend.

In some cases, children admitted under the Fair Access Protocol may exceed the school's published admission number and take precedence over applicants on the continuing interest list.

If your child has a statement of special educational needs you must contact our Special Needs Assessment Service on 020 8871 8061.
