Statistics and information
What and how much do we recycle?
What types of waste do we collect and what happens to it?
During 2010/11 we collected over 104,000 tonnes of municipal waste. This pie chart shows the different types of waste we collected. Green parks waste that was composted on site is excluded and the quantity of some materials, such as domestic clinical waste, was too small to show on the chart.
Most general waste sent to landfill is collected from local households, but some comes from other sources such as street cleansing and schools.

What materials were recycled?
During 2010/11 we sent over 26,000 tonnes of municipal waste for recycling. This chart shows the different materials that were recycled.
Most of the paper, cardboard, glass, plastics and cans were collected mixed together in orange sacks and orange-lidded banks. The chart shows the approximate quantities after these were sorted out at a "Materials Reclamation Facility" (MRF).
