Home composting

Composting kitchen and garden waste at home could cut down your rubbish by a third. If you have a garden you can make natural soil improver and compost from dead leaves, plant trimmings, grass cuttings, vegetable peelings, tea bags and dead bunches of flowers.

Home composting provides a free and eco-friendly alternative to peat-based compost.  It also avoids the costs and impacts associated with waste collection and disposal.

Even woody garden waste can be composted at home if it is chipped or shredded first, and all kitchen waste (even cooked) can be digested at home using a Green Cone. If you don't have a garden, you can still compost some waste from your kitchen at home using a wormery or kitchen composter

And if you really can't compost your kitchen waste, why not consider fitting a Food Waste Disposer (FWD) in your kitchen sink?  These enable you to get rid of kitchen scraps instantly, eliminating smells from your kitchen bin!  The Council has teamed up with local supplier SinkSation for local residents to purchase FWDs at reduced prices.
