Meeting housing needs
Our vision
We want Wandsworth to be a great place to live with decent homes, new homes and a mix of housing for the borough's growing population covering a range of needs.
What you've said
Most tenants and leaseholders are happy with the way the council's housing department manages its properties. In the wider population there is concern about the availability of affordable housing.
For some of you this means that house prices are too high. For others it means that there aren't sufficient low-cost house purchase options available.
A bigger population will mean more houses are needed and we will have to make the most of existing housing stock.
What we'll do
- Invest £95m over the next three years on improving the council's housing stock
- Repair or improve an average of 10,000 council properties per year
- Improve energy consumption and thermal efficiency
- Provide an extra 1125 affordable homes by 2011
- Halve the number of homeless households occupying temporary accommodation
- Improve accommodation choices for older people and people with learning disabilities
- Improve run-down private homes through grant aid and enforcement action
- Ensure new homes are environmentally sustainable
How we're doing it
Sadie Weems lives in a two bedroom flat created out of disused garages under the council's pioneering Hidden Homes scheme.
"It's amazing here. The garden is a real bonus; it's huge and there's a small playground as well. My two-yearold loves it and he also loves having his own room for the first time. I remember coming down here as a child and this area definitely attracted the wrong sort of attention. But now it's much brighter and nicer."
