Nine Elms

A shared vision

An artists' impression of Nine Elms

Nine Elms has long been dominated by vast industrial sites including the world famous Battersea Power Station. As the focus of the area is changing dozens of prime development opportunities are emerging right in the heart of the city.

The Opportunity Area as a whole will feature high density housing, quality public areas and green spaces, an improved New Covent Garden Market and an Embassy Quarter, and new hubs for innovation and business at Battersea Power Station and Vauxhall Cross.

The Opportunity Area falls into two local authority areas, Wandsworth and Lambeth. The councils and the Mayor of London have a shared vision for the site and are working together to deliver the significant infrastructure needed to support the new residential and business communities, and to accelerate the regeneration work already underway.  The main item is an extension of the capital's underground network to bring the entire district within minutes of London's major centres of commerce and government, and to help feed the area's new commercial hubs.

Key features of the new Nine Elms Vauxhall Opportunity Area:

A range of settings for activities and exemplary public art in open space around the Power Station.

Sensitively planned open space, and a Linear Park running through the district from Vauxhall to the Power Station.

Indoor and outdoor sports pitches.

A new school, library, police centre, and health facilities.

An improved, uninterrupted, riverside walk and new routes between developments and the riverside, for example via a pedestrian route from Wandsworth Road to Nine Elms.

Exciting children's play space particularly between developments, and for areas that are adjacent to the proposed school site.

The possibility of shared energy and waste networks, intended to create an exemplar of sustainability.

"Break-out" spaces with food and drink uses to provide a focal point and link to the main cultural sectors and civic spaces.
