Nine Elms
Northern Line extension
The proposed Northern Line extension will run from Kennington to the Battersea Power Station area. This will be the first privately funded and delivered section of the tube network in Central London. The Mayor of London, Transport for London and the area's major developers support the project and the methods of funding the extension. REO/Treasury Holdings have pledged more than £200m towards the scheme. The extension will offer a more direct link into central London, bringing Battersea Power Station to within 11 minutes of the City and West End. Two new stations will also bring 15,000 existing residents close to the tube, and alleviate congestion at Vauxhall Station and on the Victoria Line (particularly during peak hours).
A second public consultation was launched in May 2011 and further detailed designs, as well as environmental and business case work is now underway in preparation for submission of a Transport & Works Act Order (TWAO) application.
The application should be submitted in Autumn 2011 with the NLE, in the current programme, intended to be operational by the end of 2016.
Transport for London (TfL) will joint sponsor the application. A Working Group has been set up to help deliver the project.
