Marriages
What you must do to get married
Giving notice of your intention to marry
You need to visit the Register Office and give notice of your intention to marry. This is a legal requirement. The fee is £33.50 for each notice of marriage and is not refundable if the marriage does not take place.
You can call into the office for our drop in service or you can make an appointment. We offer out of hours appointments on Saturdays.
To make an appointment either call the office on 020 8871 6124 or book online.
You must produce evidence of nationality and identity:
- A current passport
- Some proof of residence - for example a council tax or utility bill recently dated
Proof of the ending of any former marriage or civil partnership may also be required.
If you do not have all the relevant documents your notice will not be taken.
If you are subject to immigration control
For anyone subject to immigration control, the situation has now changed.
- You will both need to attend a designated register office if one or both are subject to immigration control
- You will need documents that prove your nationality and identity - passports ideally but is your responsibility to provide sufficient evidence.
- If you are a foreign national and do not have a passport you may have a National ID card or a Home Office travel document
- You will need to provide proof of residence - if it is a utility bill it will need to be recently dated
Wandsworth is a designated office.
Both the bride and the groom must give a notice of intention to marry in person. No one else can do this on your behalf.
Everyone getting married in England and Wales needs to do this before the ceremony. (Those being married in the Parish Church usually follow different procedures).
Giving notice of your intention to marry permits your marriage to take place after sixteen clear days and within a year of the date of giving notice.
You do not need to be resident in Wandsworth to be married at our Register Office.
