Wandsworth Battalion frees Villers-Plouich

The Wandsworth Battalion advanced on the village of Villers-Plouich (near Cambrai), France, in April 1917.They successfully attacked and the village was taken from the Germans and held. Many deeds of great heroism and bravery had been performed and a number of men were recommended for decorations. For Edward Foster (pictured), a Tooting dustman, Britain reserved its very highest award, the Victoria Cross.
Throughout the remainder of April and until the end of September 1917 the Battalion continued front-line trench duties in Villers-Plouich and the surrounding areas.
