Wandsworth's links with France

Introduction

Wandsworth's links with France date back to World War 1 when the 'Pals' battalions of Wandsworth and Battersea freed the villages of Villers-Plouich and Flers, respectively, from German occupation.

Wandsworth Council went on to 'adopt' Villers-Plouich through a scheme in which British towns and cities helped fund the restoration of a devastated French or Belgium community.

Since that time, Wandworth Council has maintained contact with both villages. Our various mayors and Councillors also make regular visits to pay their respects at memorials that commemorate the deeds of great bravery and sacrifice made by the men of the 'Pals' battalions.
