In the 1970s, the decline of manufacturing industries in central London contributed to inner city decay and unemployment problems for local people. Old works, such as Morgan's Crucibles, closed or moved out and developers were encouraged to use the disused sites for new offices and private housing.

New residents moved into the area. Many from India, Pakistan and East Africa have contributed to the rich cultural diversity of Wandsworth. Areas like Battersea, close to the West End, became fashionable with young professionals. Shops, restaurants and pubs changed to suit the tastes of the new residents.
