Story of Wandsworth
The 1960s – amalgamation of the boroughs
For more than 1,000 years, local government was managed by the parishes. In the 1800s the population grew so fast that new arrangements were needed. The boroughs of Battersea and Wandsworth were created in 1900. In 1965 London local government was reorganised, forming larger authorities. Battersea and Wandsworth, without Clapham and Streatham, were combined to form the new London Borough of Wandsworth.
