Changing a tenancy

Council tenants

Change in circumstances

We recognise that you may wish to change your tenancy, for example if you get married or enter into a civil partnership or want to set up a joint tenancy with your partner. If you wish to apply for a joint tenancy please contact your housing officer.

If you are already a joint tenant you may want to set up a tenancy for just yourself, for example if you have divorced or separated from your partner. Again contact your housing officer to discuss the options available.

Death of a tenant

When a tenant dies the tenancy can pass to a spouse, civil partner or a person who lived with the tenant as if they were husband and wife or civil partners. For secure periodic tenancies that began before the 1st April 2012 and all introductory tenancies the tenancy can pass to resident members of the tenant's family, subject to certain conditions. Your housing officer can provide you with more information on this and the conditions that apply.

Notifying the council

You must tell the council, in writing, within 28 days, of any permanent change in the people living in the property.
