Waste charges for schools, charities and places of worship

Services for schools, charities and places of worship

The council provides refuse and recycling collection services for charities, schools, residential hostels, prisons and public halls used solely for public meetings.  We only do this upon request and make a charge for refuse collections.  The charge covers the approximate cost of collecting the waste but does not cover the cost of disposing of it.

Organisations interested in the refuse collection service that don't already receive it are encouraged to refer to a Government statement.

The council does not currently charge these organisations for recycling collection services.

Free waste collection

Places of religious worship, including churches, which are exempted from local non-domestic rating by virtue of the Local Government Finance Act 1988, are entitled to receive free waste collections.

Recycling at school

  • The Recycle Western Riverside "Recycle at School" programme can provide free recycling and waste reduction support to your school.
  • The council can supply re-usable orange bags to help divert paper etc for recycling in classrooms.  To request a supply, please email wasteservices@wandsworth.gov.uk.
  • Schools are encouraged to host a textile bank for parents and students to use.   These can raise money for charity or for the school.  A variety of organisations can potentially provide this service including Scope and Wastebusters.  Or for more information email wasteservices@wandsworth.gov.uk.
  • Pupils are encouraged to make a Youth Green Pledge.
