Respite care in care homes
Overview
Care homes can provide short-term care for the person you look after so that you can get a break. If Adult Social Services help pay toward short term breaks in residential care, both your benefits and those of the person that you look after may be affected. Wandsworth Carers' Centre can advise you further, phone: 020 8877 1200.
If you feel that the person you care for needs or will be needing permanent care in a home, contact our Access Team or talk to your GP.
Each case irequires an individual assessment and when selecting a home through discussion with you and the person you care for, we will respect your needs and wishes wherever possible, particularly in relation to ethnic, religious and cultural matters.
If you need help during this process in order to know your rights, procedural guidelines and financial implications contact the Wandsworth Carers' Centre on 020 8877 1200, the Care Fees Advisory Services (Help the Aged) on 0500 76 74 76 or Carers UK on 0808 808 7777. This can be a very stressful experience and these agencies will do all they can to help you make satisfactory decisions and to be aware of problems and pitfalls that you may encounter.
A UK directory of care homes can be found on either www.cqc.org.uk or www.bettercaring.com.
