About business rates
Introduction
The Business Rate, also known as non-domestic rates (NDR), is a tax on properties that are not used for domestic purposes (for example, shops, factories and offices).
We collect Business Rates on behalf of central government. The council is required to pay the money due for Business Rates into a national pool, whether or not it has all been collected. This money is then shared out to each local authority depending on their population. Business Rates, together with council tax, help the council to pay for its services.
Each year we produce leaflets to accompany the Business Rate bill that
provide explanatory notes on Business Rates, details of the council's
budget and the various payment facilities available. You can download them from Business Rates downloads.
