It is an indisputable fact that an effective governing body has a significant impact on school improvement. A recent study noted:
"Where governance was good, standards of attainment were likely to be higher than in other schools. The behaviour of pupils, the quality of teaching and the leadership and management of schools were also more likely to be good."

This year's training and support programme reflects feedback from governors and what we think are essential aspects of governors' work and current priorities. We hope that all governing bodies will want to make sure that they are represented on as many of the sessions as possible.
We would like to encourage governing bodies to identify their priorities for training as part of a general process of self-evaluation. Training is most effective where information gained is shared with other members of the governing body.
Last year we suggested that governing bodies identify a link training governor who would keep a training log and ensure that all new governors attend the "Governors' Essentials" sessions and that other governors have the opportunity to attend a range of training.
