Recycling Services

Why recycle?

Plastic bottlesRecycling gives things a future.  Making new products from waste means we don't have to bury or burn it. This saves energy and resources, which is good for the economy and the environment.

As recycling costs less than disposing of waste, recycling more helps to keep council tax low.  If people in Wandsworth suddenly stopped recycling the council's waste disposal costs would increase by over £1.5m every year.  And every additional tonne you recycle currently saves another £58.50.

Did you know?

Wandsworth now sends zero waste direct to landfill.  Instead, residual rubbish is now delivered to a new energy-from waste incinerator in Belvedere, Bexley where it helps to generate electricity for the National Grid.  This enables metals and aggregates to be recovered from the incinerated ashes, increasing Wandsworth's recycling rate in 2011/12 from 28.5% to 45.9%!  More information about waste disposal and recycling performance.
