Recycling Collection Services
What cannot be recycled from home
We collect a mix of certain recyclable materials. You can recycle more materials at public recycling sites and at the Household Waste and Recycling Centres (tips) in the borough.
The following items cannot be recycled by putting them in your orange sack or recycling bank. Some items can be recycled or reused in other ways and some are best avoided where possible.
- Garden waste
- Food waste
- Kitchen foil or foil trays
- Clothes or shoes
- Ovenware such as Pyrex dishes and saucepans
- Plastic carrier bags
- Electrical equipment
- Batteries
- Plastic coated card, like takeaway coffee cups or ice-cream tubs
- Lightbulbs
Why can't I put these items in the orange sack?
Recycling some items can be difficult. It may be that their physical properties make them hard to separate out from other materials, or because the material itself loses its useful qualities if not recycled in a specific way. It may not be cost-efficient to try recycling certain things, or a market may not exist for a particular recycled product.
Recycling can also be a problem if the rubbish item is a mixture of more than one material, for example waxed cartons. As recycling technology improves, it will be possible to recycle more in the future.
