Travel choices - buses

Key aims include improving the frequency and geographical spread of local bus services and reducing the environmental impact of London 's fleet. We also want more 'countdown' information screens at local bus stops so residents know when to expect the next bus.

Green buses for Wandsworth

The Mayor has begun to introduce low emission hybrid buses, zero emission hydrogen buses and is retrofitting diesel models with pollution reducing catalytic convertors.

Large numbers of bus routes converge in Putney, Wandsworth Town , Clapham Junction and Tooting causing high levels of air pollution in the local area. The council is lobbying TfL for these routes to have the highest priority when the new and upgraded models are brought into service.

A London BusProgress

In December 2011 TfL agreed to introduce hybrid models on three routes through Putney thanks to concerted pressure from Wandsworth Council and the Putney Society.

In January 2012 the council completed a traffic and air quality study in Putney which shows that more than two thirds of nitrogen dioxide exhaust emissions come from buses. The findings have been presented to TfL and will be used to help decide which routes are given top priority for the next batch of greener buses.
